"Passages" Video

Here is a video from my solo show “Passages” at Altamira Fine Art in Jackson Hole, WY. That’s my voice you hear reading the artist statement that I wrote for the show. Feel free to mute the audio - that’s what I do when I watch this because there are few things I dislike more than hearing recordings of my voice. I’ll post the text of my artist statement below so that you won’t miss out on anything.

“I find myself in a time of questions, and you probably do too. My world feels rearranged, familiar and also unknown. And on that spectrum are these paintings, pieces that have taken shape while the world around us has transformed.

These are paintings I started over two years ago along with ones I started a few weeks ago. They are passages and pathways from different moments in my life, ideas that cross and flow into each other.

So many changes. The pandemic comes. I buy a house, paint the walls, plant a garden. And outside the world seems less sure than ever, more fierce.

And outside the world is beautiful, a solace. Birds migrate without regard for quarantine or unemployment. The sun rises despite injustice. I walk through the woods. I watch the colors in the sky. The seasons cycle through my work, through myself, ending and also spilling over into whatever is next.

And I keep painting, some days worried, some days self-absorbed, occasionally trying to be generous.

I want neat categories:  before, during, after. Resolution and certainty. The outside view. But really I am always submerged in the present, inside of the questions.

Now more than ever I want to give space for contemplation, to slow the world down, to breathe deeply, see deeply, think gently. And maybe we can wonder together, what comes next?”
