Quilted Autumn

Oil on linen panel

40 x 60 inches

Private Collection

For generations my family has been making quilts. I have always been surrounded by these cloth works of art, patchwork designs sewn into beautiful patterns, mosaics of re-used materials. Autumn aspen forests are living quilts. They are pieces of color lying draped over hills and clinging to valleys in vibrant patchworks and subtle gradations. Yellow and orange are stitched next to green and brown, white trunks peering out like strands of thread. As I painted this piece I thought of the many quilts that my family has made through the years, and that perhaps my paintings are motivated in part by the same desire to meditatively arrange pieces of color together into beautiful designs.
